Getting Elective Non–writers to Put Down their Game Controllers and Pick Up Their Pens

For 4th–8th Grade Teachers

We all know that adolescents write best when they choose their own writing topics. But, how do we make that happen while meeting the numerous standards and teaching oversized classes of students with mixed abilities? This workshop focuses on a persuasive–essay writing unit on the high-interest topic of violence in the media, specifically in video games. This approach uses discussion, note taking, critical reading of various articles, and a gallery walk to provide students with ideas to incorporate in a persuasive essay during a timed in-class writing.

Many Voices, One Text:
Using Karen Hesse's Witness to Model the Power of Voice

For 9th–12th Grade Teachers

When students can make connections with texts or voices of particular characters, they are more likely to be engaged rather than resistant readers and writers. Karen Hesse's multi-genre text Witness provides an excellent example of multiple perspectives on a single event/experience. Through readers' theater and writing activities, participants will learn strategies that can help students develop their own voices in connecting with, interpreting, and responding to literature.

Making Every English Classroom an AP Classroom

For 9–12 Grade Teachers

AP and non-AP teachers alike will benefit from this weeklong immersion in writing strategies, analytic modes, mythological study, alternative approaches to style and grammar, and expanding your writing curriculum. Going beyond the five-paragraph essay, we will cover multiple approaches to research, varied analytic techniques, and a wide range of structures to prepare students to compose poetry, the personal essay, feature writing, persuasive pieces, and critical analyses. Our study in mythology will explain how to unlock major themes in all literature and use those themes to compose reflective and analytic writing. Finally, we will explore alternative approaches to style to illustrate how studying diction, syntax, and tone is key to developing voice.

Improving Student Academic Writing
(ISAW) Institute

For 9–12 Grade Teachers

Let’s face it: most of our students will not choose to become English majors in college. Yet much of our writing instruction in English classes is developed as if they were. The principles and practices of ISAW—which focuses on developing analytical writing skills—will illuminate your mission as a teacher of writing, allowing you to help students move beyond the restrictions of the five-paragraph theme and truly prepare for the various demands of college writing. Join us for a weeklong institute of strategies for empowering students to write analytically, academically--and engagingly!

Climbing the Scaffold:
Guides to the Magic and Mundane in Teaching Writing

For 7–12 Grade Teachers

The idea of "scaffolding" to boost student achievement has uses far beyond its origins in English Language Acquisition. By now, teachers across the curriculum have embraced scaffolding as a way to make concrete the ideas and skills that might otherwise seem too abstract. "Climbing the Scaffold" will focus on the practical applications of scaffolding in writing instruction, creating scaffolds to suit your students’ specific needs, and using scaffolds to promote advanced thinking skills. It will be a relaxed, enjoyable week for both new and veteran teachers alike!

Reducing Student Anxiety Towards Multi–Paragraph Essay Writing

For 9th–12th Grade Teachers

Many high school students feel that they cannot write a "good" essay and therefore choose not to write anything when the dreaded essay is assigned. In this workshop, participants will experience a variety of scaffolding techniques that break the essay into manageable chunks leading to the first draft of an informational/narrative essay, focusing on students' personal/family histories and future goals.
